The wedding cake receives a place of honor near the head table at the reception, where it is only display until the moment it is cut and served. A wedding cake topper is the crowning touch on any LDS wedding cake, with options available for every style and theme.

When most people think of a wedding cake topper, they immediately picture traditional bride and groom figures that are either standing next to each other, holding hands, linking arms, dancing, or kissing. While these traditional style wedding cake toppers are still available and popular, there are also many other options for unique wedding cake toppers.

Funny wedding cake toppers usually play on the “ball and chain” idea, with the bride reeling in the groom like a fish or dragging him away by the ankle. These cake toppers aren’t for everyone, but are sometimes chosen by a couple with a casual wedding or a strong-willed bride who doesn’t mind laughing at herself a little.

Customized cake toppers have the opportunity to incorporate important elements of your life other than just the fact that you are getting married. Custom cake toppers might feature that bride and groom playing baseball or riding a motorcycle, for example. Military weddings may want to order a cake topper with the groom in military dress. Some custom cake topper manufacturers can use a picture of the bride and groom to create 100% unique cake topper figurines that look just like them.

Many wedding cake toppers feature traditional styling, but some couples choose cake toppers with a distinct vintage or retro look. Others like more of an abstract wedding cake topper, where the figures aren’t two colored realistic figures but a porcelain statue evoking the image of a bride and groom. Such toppers have an artsy look and feel to them.

In a discussion about cake toppers, we sometimes forget that wedding cake toppers don’t have to be figurines at all. In fact, non-figure cake toppers have recently been rising in popularity because of their fresh look. Many choose a monogram cake topper, where the initials of the bride and groom either sit upright on top of the cake or are engraved into a glass plate. Interlocking hearts, doves, leaves, or swans are also popular choices for unusual wedding cake toppers.

If your wedding has a theme, you might want to consider embellishing your cake with something that embodies it. A beach themed wedding cake topper might feature flip flops or a bride and groom underneath palm trees. An Asian-themed cake topper could be an ornate fan in the wedding colors or the Chinese character for “love” etched on glass. A winter wedding can even have two snowmen, one wearing a wedding veil and the other wearing a top hat.

Wedding cake toppers can be as versatile as you want them to be. Not every LDS couple utilizes the opportunity to customize their wedding cake with a cake topper, but couples who shop around will quickly see that there is a cake topper out there to fit any style, wedding theme, and budget.
