No matter what your wedding reception is like, you’re going to need some type of table covering. The choices range from the flimsy dollar-store plastic tablecloths to heavyweight luxury linens rented from a professional. Most LDS brides prefer to fall somewhere in the middle of this spectrum.

If you are holding your reception in the cultural hall of your ward or branch, then prepare for some good news: the Relief Society or ward activities committee most likely has a few dozen white or cream-colored tablecloths on hand that they will lend to you for use in the chapel, completely free of charge.

You are responsible for setting them up, taking them down, washing, and returning them after the reception is over. In general, the ward’s stash of table linens will be relatively well taken care of, but a few small stains, marks, or tears are more than likely going to be present. You can expect ward tablecloths to be plain but durable.

One of your first stops in planning for table linens is to get a price quote from your caterer and your reception facility. If they offer table linens, make sure to compare the quote with other sources to see if you can find a better deal elsewhere.

These professionals have a large stock of tablecloths available, but often only carry one color: white. If you have your heart set on colored tablecloths, you may have to make your own arrangements for table linens and supply them for the caterer.

Wedding Table Linen Rental Companies

Since they specialize in providing table linens, specialty linen rental companies can usually offer the most in terms of selection. They carry tablecloths in a variety of colors, shapes, sizes, patterns, and styles.

They should also be able to provide you with color swatches and precise measuring instructions and guidance during the ordering process. Check their policies on what happens if you damage or lose a tablecloth, and whether they will pick up and deliver the linens or if you will be responsible for doing that.

How Many Reception Tablecloths Will I Need?

Once you’ve drawn up your guest list and know the dimensions of the tables you’ll be using at the reception, you can start to estimate how many tablecloths you will need. If in doubt, err on the side of caution. It’s better to have too many than not enough, especially when spills and accidents happen. Don’t forget to include the gift table, the wedding party’s table, and any other tables that will be involved in the reception.

Waiting until the last minute to reserve your table linens is not only stressful, it will probably result in extra expenses. Planning ahead gives you peace of mind and allows you to save money by shopping around for the best deal. Though many details need attention during the wedding planning phase, don’t forget about reception table linens for your guests.
